Waipipi Windfarm is situated in South Taranaki on the Western Coast of the New Zealand North Island and was icubed’s first renewables venture across the Tasman sea.
The wind farm sits atop iron sand dunes and extends to within a few hundred metres of the coastline. The major civil challenge for the project has been, how to keep the turbines standing when the ground shakes and the sand loses strength? With the support of our geotechnical design team, the icubed wind turbine generator foundation designs consist of a combination of Rammed Aggregate Pier (RAP’s) and Deep Dynamic Compaction (DDC) ground improvement. Perched atop this ground improvement are the icubed consulting’s mass gravity foundations and the Siemans Gamesa Towers overlooking the South Taranaki Bight.
