Residential Design: Smart Concepts to Meet Brief and Budgets
icubed consulting are often approached by clients with unique and challenging blocks of land, whether it is sloping or irregular in shape, who still want to build the dream home within the dream budget.
This residence was the subject of such a dilemma, with builders quotes were for the existing design coming in 50% over budget. icubed was approached for a concept design that could be used for a D&C builders contract, and always liking a challenge, Lead Architect Marc Duncalfe met with the client to discuss options for the redesign. It is gratifying to see the final build (and budget) is very similar to the concept.
Considerations made during the concept process included the narrow access lane to the site, irregular shaped block meaning there are no perpendicular and parallel boundaries to align with and protected vegetation that required retention. The client had a maximum budget and a ‘must-have’ list including open plan living, entertainment and living looking out the bushland setting and no part of the house to be more than 1m above the external ground level.
