Since 2017, icubed consulting has undertaken the detailed design and testing of light weight, non-corrosive columns that have been used in state-owned water infrastructure projects throughout Australia. Water tank facilities are usually subjected to harsh environments. Typically constructed with painted or galvanised steel and reinforced concrete, most steel tank materials are required to be replaced within 20 years of operation.
The water tanks icubed design have varied in size from 20m to 40m diameter, with columns spanning anywhere from 8 m to 12 m in height using Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sections. These columns provide a 100-year design life, will not rust, rot or corrode, and have been approved for potable water use to Australian Standards testing.
icubed have also provided preliminary designs for purlins and roof rafters for a number of water tank projects in QLD,
NSW and SA.
The following facilities have been designed by icubed and Wagners CFT using FRP columns:
• 28x columns for Myponga Water Treatment Plant for South Australia Water (SA Water)
• 40x columns for Kingscote Water Treatment Plant for SA Water
• 24x columns for Happy Valley Reservoir for SA Water
• 9x columns for Cowra Reservoir for Water NSW
icubed have undertaken rigorous detailed design and testing on these applications. Our engineering design undergoes various stages of analysis from using spreadsheets and simple 3D structural models to a full Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS for column buckling capacities. icubed continue to oversee testing of these columns at WCFT’s facility in Toowoomba with great results.
