Nick Canto is an executive, engineer and entrepreneur with over 24 years’ experience in the infrastructure and energy sectors. He is the managing director of icubed consulting, a Brisbane based development consulting practice, which specialises in renewable energy and infrastructure projects. Founded by Nick in 2003, icubed today employs over 50 staff and has an annual turnover of over $11m. Since inception, icubed has consulted on over 3 GW of constructed wind energy projects across Australia. In late 2015, Nick founded Yarranlea Solar to develop a 121.5 MWp PV solar project 50 km south- west of Toowoomba. The main purpose of the Yarranlea Solar project was to demonstrate the broad capabilities of icubed to the market. Its success has resulted in icubed being commissioned to manage the approval of approximately 1 GW of PV solar and battery storage projects across Queensland. Nick’s depth of knowledge and expertise in energy project development is sought out by developers to provide expert strategic advice across a range of technologies.
Aside from managing all technical aspects of the Yarranlea Solar project, including AEMO and Ergon approvals for the project generator performance standards, Nick is also responsible for the financial management of the business. This involved arrangement of over $3.5m of private equity and debt funding to enable the project to reach ‘shovel ready’ status in late 2017. He also managed negotiations with a number of international and Australian organisations resulting in the January 2018 sale of Yarranlea Solar to Shanghai-based Risen Energy. Nick retains an interest in Yarranlea Solar through an ongoing services agreement with icubed.
Nick grew up in country Queensland, and upon completing his senior school and tertiary education in Toowoomba, he worked in a range of technical and executive engineering roles in Toowoomba and Melbourne. He now lives in Brisbane with his wife, two teenage children and twin Dachshunds. Nick is a keen cyclist, is passionate about the environment and using his skills to leave a meaningful legacy for the next generation.
