S.R. Smith approached icubed consulting to assist them in designing a non-ferrous seal pen enclosure at Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney. The seal pen enclosure was to act as a lift to assist the animal handlers with moving seals in and out of each pool. The design of this structure was particularly sensitive as on-site dimensions for transportation and installation were tight. Further to this, Taronga Park Zoo were looking for materials that were inert, corrosion resistant and easy to maintain. FRP beams were selected to meet these requirements and the structure was designed to hold a number of seals, animal handlers and the weight of free draining water on the deck.
The project was a great success and we understand that the animals love their new enclosure.
