2018 marks icubed’s inaugural entry in the Queensland Corporate Games. Dragon Boat racing was our sport of choice, which involves 20 paddlers in a long canoe sitting two abreast with a drummer and a sweep at either end. For the boat to move through the water all team members need to row in unison.
Our Dragon Boat journey began with training sessions with Te Waka Dragon Boat Club. They taught us the basic techniques of dragon boating from positioning to timing and most importantly- how to stay in the boat and not in the Brisbane River.
With multiple trainings under our belt, race day arrived and we were ready. We had a secret weapon of a powerhouse engine room sitting in the middle of the boat; their strength alone could get us over the finish line. We won two out of three of our heats, with our cumulative time putting us in 4th place overall (out of 12 teams) and making the minor final.
Using our skills and unison, we crossed the line in first place! Victory was sweet, until we forgot the cardinal rule of our training; do not celebrate until you are on land. With many oars out of the water in triumphant cheer, we lost balance and capsized the boat. We thought we were going to come into the competition and achieve the unthinkable by winning and ended up achieving something even more rare in Dragon Boat racing- capsizing.
All in all, it was a great day of fun, fitness and teamwork which we look forward to competing again, hopefully staying dry next time!
